A Healthy Pumpkin Pie recipe

Pumpkin pie: one of the great American traditions. It’s the grand finale of Thanksgiving, the dessert that makes everyone loosen their pants “just a little,” and the one dish even picky eaters magically find room for.

But here’s the thing most people don’t realize: a lot of the ingredients in store-bought pies – and even many canned pie mixes contain unnecessary additives and chemicals. From preservatives to artificial flavor enhancers to questionable fillers, these ingredients don’t exactly scream “holiday wellness.”

And if you’re a parent trying to keep your child’s gut health, skin health, and inflammation in check (especially my eczema families — I see you!), then the typical pumpkin pie can be a sneaky holiday troublemaker.

You don’t have to give up tradition, just give it a cleaner upgrade. Here I am sharing with you a simple, wholesome pumpkin pie recipe delivers the same amazing taste without the toxic ingredients commonly found in store-bought versions. It’s easy, delicious, and made with real, recognizable ingredients your body (and taste buds) will appreciate.

If you’ve been looking for a healthier, holiday-friendly dessert your family will this Thanksgiving, you’ve found it!

Clean & Easy Pumpkin Pie Recipe (No Weird Additives!)

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 can (15 oz) pure pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix)
  • 1 1/4 cups evaporated milk or half & half
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 pie crust of choice (homemade or clean store-bought)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. In a large bowl, combine all filling ingredients and mix until smooth.
  3. Pour filling into your pie crust.
  4. Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce oven temperature to 350°F and bake an additional 40–50 minutes.
  5. Let pie cool for 2 hours before serving.
  6. Enjoy with homemade whipped cream or refrigerate until serving time.

Why Make a Cleaner Pumpkin Pie?

As a pediatrician focused on gut health, inflammation, and eczema healing, I can’t help myself! I read ingredient labels even during the holidays. And here’s what I often see:

  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Artificial flavors
  • Carrageenan
  • Food dyes
  • Hydrogenated oils
  • Emulsifiers that irritate the gut
  • Preservatives you need a chemistry degree to pronounce

And when the gut is irritated, the skin often follows. None of these things belong in a dessert meant to nourish connection, family time, and celebration.

When supporting eczema naturally, we want to:

  • reduce inflammatory ingredients
  • support the gut–skin connection
  • avoid additives that disrupt the immune system
  • give kids whole, real foods their bodies recognize

This recipe uses simple ingredients you recognize. Nothing more. Nothing less.

You get the same creamy, spiced pumpkin goodness without the inflammation-triggering additives. And yes… it still tastes incredible!

A Holiday Treat You Can Feel Good About

If you’re trying to keep your kids’ eczema calm, support their gut health, or simply avoid unnecessary chemicals, this clean pumpkin pie is a win-win. It’s:

  • Easy
  • Delicious
  • Clean
  • Kid-approved
  • Holiday-table worthy

And it reminds us that healthier choices don’t have to mean compromising on tradition or flavor.
